Need Loft Access Without a Staircase? Prefab Folding Ladder Guide

You need to get upstairs but you don’t necessarily want a staircase permanently occupying the room downstairs.

It is a surprisingly common problem.

Perhaps you have added a loft above a garage. Maybe you need access to a studio, storage area, mezzanine or occasional-use upper level. A conventional staircase would work, but once you calculate how much floor space it consumes, it can feel like you are giving up half the benefit of creating the extra space in the first place.

An attic ladder may be too restrictive. A rolling ladder still needs somewhere to live. And a permanent staircase can dominate a room both physically and visually.

That is exactly where a wall-mounted folding ladder can make sense.

What is a Bcompact Prefab Folding Ladder?

The Bcompact Prefab Ladder is a side-folding access solution made from bamboo that opens when you need to reach the upper level and folds back against the wall when you don't.

It uses the same distinctive Bcompact folding principle, materials and engineering approach as our Custom Range, but instead of being individually designed around every dimension of your space, the Prefab Range is manufactured in standardised sizes.

That distinction is important.

Prefab does not mean a lesser version of the Bcompact Fold. It means the major dimensions have already been predetermined, allowing us to manufacture the product more efficiently, offer a quicker route to purchase and provide a more accessible price point when your space happens to suit one of the standard sizes.

If your dimensions fit, Prefab can be an excellent solution.

If they don't, that is where a Custom Bcompact Stair or Ladder becomes the better option.

Is this the same thing as an attic ladder?

Not quite.

Traditional attic ladders generally disappear into a ceiling opening and are primarily intended for access to an attic or roof space.

A Bcompact Prefab Ladder is mounted alongside your access area and folds sideways against the wall. When opened, it creates a defined route between the lower and upper levels. When folded away, the floor area it occupied while in use becomes available again.

This makes it particularly interesting for garage lofts, studios, workshops, compact homes and other spaces where the upper area needs to be genuinely usable but a conventional staircase would consume too much valuable room below.

You may also have arrived here after searching for a “folding staircase”, “collapsible staircase” or “space-saving staircase”. Those terms are often used to describe the same problem. Within the Bcompact range, however, our ready-made Prefab product is classified as a Ladder, while our more stair-like configurations are available through the Custom Range.

How much room does a folding ladder save?

The biggest difference is that you are not permanently committing the floor area required by an open staircase.

A conventional staircase remains in the room 24 hours a day.

A Bcompact Ladder uses the necessary floor run while you are climbing it, then folds sideways back towards the wall once you are finished.

One Bcompact customer recently described exactly this dilemma after researching ways to reach a second-floor loft. Attic stairs were too restrictive for moving equipment, a lift would interrupt the middle of the loft, a conventional staircase consumed too much space and a rolling ladder would remain in the room when it wasn't being used.

What sizes are available?

Unlike a Custom Bcompact product, the Prefab Range is built around predetermined Floor to Floor heights.

The current standard sizes are:

The adjustment range matters.

For example, a 2.4m/94.5inch Prefab Ladder is not designed to accommodate every height somewhere between 2.1m/82.7inch and 2.7m/106.3inch. Its recommended finished Floor to Floor range is 2350–2450mm/92.5-96.5inch.

If your measurement falls outside the range of the relevant model, we recommend looking at a Custom solution rather than trying to force a Prefab product to suit a space it wasn't designed for.

That transparency is important with a product like this. A standardised solution is excellent when your space fits the parameters. Customisation exists for the spaces that don't.

What does “Floor to Floor” actually mean?

Floor to Floor, or FTF, is the vertical measurement from the finished floor at the bottom of the ladder to the finished floor level you are trying to reach above.

Not the ceiling height.

Not the height to the underside of the loft.

And not the size of the opening.

For anyone researching a Prefab Ladder, this is the first measurement we recommend confirming. For example, if you measure approximately 94.5 inches (2400 mm) from the finished downstairs floor to the finished floor of your loft, you would begin by looking at our 2.4m/94.5" Prefab model.

If your project is still under construction, make sure you are considering the final finished floor levels, including any flooring that is still to be installed.

How steep is a Bcompact Prefab Ladder?

The standard Bcompact Prefab Ladder is designed around a 65-degree climbing angle, with 142mm deep treads, or 5.6 inches and a fixed 300 mm rise, or approximately 11.8 inches.

That makes it more compact than a conventional staircase and is one of the reasons it can work in spaces where a full stair cannot.

Some lower-angle Prefab configurations may also be available depending on the model. If your priority is a more stair-like angle, deeper treads or greater flexibility around the exact geometry of the space, our Custom Stair Range may be more appropriate.

This is an important distinction when comparing products online.

The smallest footprint is not automatically the best solution. The right product is the one that provides the balance of access, available floor space, angle and usability appropriate for your project.

Is the Prefab Ladder made from the same materials as the Custom Range?

Yes.

The standardisation is in the design dimensions, not in downgrading the product.

Bcompact products are manufactured in Australia using laminated bamboo and high-grade, non-ferrous components. The Prefab Ladder uses the same Bcompact side-folding principle that allows the ladder to transform from a usable access solution into a compact folded form against the wall.

This is one of the reasons Prefab is particularly useful for customers who love the Bcompact concept but don't necessarily require a completely bespoke design.

Can I install it myself?

Many customers install their Bcompact Ladder themselves or have their builder, carpenter or other suitably experienced tradesperson complete the installation.

Detailed installation instructions are supplied with the product.

Correct installation is important. In particular, the fixed stringer must be securely attached to a suitable side wall and the upper folding connection and catch arrangement must be installed correctly.

If you are planning your project before construction is complete, that is actually a good time to think about the ladder. Wall structure, upper landing details, openings, balustrades and surrounding finishes can often be planned to integrate neatly with the finished installation.

Prefab or Custom: which Bcompact should I choose?

The easiest way to think about the two ranges is that neither is inherently “better”.

They solve slightly different problems.

If your dimensions happen to suit the Prefab Range, you can receive the same Bcompact folding concept without paying for customisation you don't need.

If your space has an unusual Floor to Floor height, limited run, a difficult upper landing, windows or doors in the fixing area, or you simply want a more stair-like configuration, Custom is likely to be the better path.

What should I measure before ordering?

Before purchasing a Prefab Ladder, there are a few things worth checking carefully:

1. Your finished Floor to Floor height.

2. The available wall run where the ladder is attached to (any obstructions such as windows or outlets?)

3. The wall or structure available for fixing the stationary side of the ladder.

4. Which direction you want the ladder to fold.

5. The width available around the installation.

6. Your upper-level access condition: for example a loft edge, mezzanine, ceiling opening or upper-level doorway.

7. Nearby doors, windows, furniture, cabinetry or other objects that could interfere with the ladder when it opens or folds.

Photos are also extremely helpful.

A couple of wide-angle images showing the lower room, the intended wall and the upper access point can reveal things that measurements alone sometimes don't.

Is a folding ladder suitable as my main staircase?

Not necessarily.

A folding ladder and a conventional staircase have different purposes, geometry and intended uses.

If the upper level will be accessed constantly throughout the day, if very young or elderly users need regular access, or if local building requirements call for a conventional staircase, those considerations should form part of your decision.

For many lofts, garage conversions, studios, storage areas and secondary spaces, however, the problem is very different:

“I need good access to the upper level, but I don't want to surrender this entire section of the room to a staircase.”

That is the problem Bcompact was created to solve.

So, is a Bcompact Prefab Ladder right for your space?

Start with two measurements: your Floor to Floor height and your available wall run.

If your dimensions fall within one of the Prefab ranges and the surrounding structure is suitable, the decision can be surprisingly straightforward. Choose the appropriate size, confirm your configuration and order your ladder.

If they don't fit, don't compromise the project simply to make a standard product work.
